Pie-Shaped Moon
Moonpie - Moonpie [PLP-6799 JPN 2021 24-Bit FLAC]
Japanese reissue label P-Vine Records has been digging deep into the archives for its Groove-Diggers series and pulled out a real obscurity which is highly worthy of a rip. The only album by Alabama funk seven-piece Moonpie was originally released on the Lanark Records label in 1977 and original copies are as rare as rocking' horse poop.
Expect eight funk/soul standard workouts, mostly cover versions of stuff by Tower Of Power, Stevie Wonder, Brothers Johnson, Creative Source, The Commodores and a couple of the band's own compositions, plus a bizarre out-of-place cover of Steely Dan's My Old School.
I noticed a few sections of secondary crackle during my preparation of this rip, which likely suggests that some of the original master tapes may be lost forever.

ReplyDelete"Super Rare and vinyl in great played once condition. Cover has slight shelf wear."
Only one play, hmmm.
Thank you. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI'll be the oddball who says "I don't like this." It seems like an approximation for all the original versions, or the original artists doing their thing. eh, maybe I was in a bad state of mind. But .... it didn't hit me right. However, I am super happy to have the chance give it a test drive. I am glad for once to not want something that costs an exorbitant amount of money. For reference, I played Men At Work's "Cargo" earlier tonight while putting down some vinyl flooring in my basement, so that tells you what you need to know about me! heh heh. I love the Japanese jazz, particularly Jiro Inagaki ... but this just didn't hit me right. So ... this is a reissue, rather than actual Japanese artists ... different deal ... well ... it is what it is.
