Stop Everything

Working For A Nuclear Free City - What Do People Do All Day? [MELO 104 UK 2016 24-Bit FLAC] Working For A Nuclear Free City were from Manchester and managed to release four albums during their ten year career. WFANFC delivered a convoluted but enjoyable mix of samples, nu-gaze indie rock, looped dub beats and warped disco.   What Do People Do All Day? was their final album and if you need to hear something different today, this album is for you. This is a record full of surprises, holding the listeners interest throughout the full 45 minutes of aural exposition. There are no real consistent themes or styles, everything you hear is literally unexpected as these lads reveal a total disregard for convention. If you are seeking a stand-out, tune into the opening  Bottlerocket and the sublime Stop Everything , but don't skip anything else because you will possibly miss something ...it's that kind of record. Happy listening. A1 Bottlerocket A2 Ordinary Peop...

Fluffy Obscurities

Image
Pink Floyd - Obscured By Clouds [SHSP 4020 UK 1972 24-Bit FLAC] It may come as a surprise to most that I own most of the Pink Floyd album back catelogue on vinyl. These were acquired mostly second-hand during the nineties when I was expanding my musical horizon and seeking alternatives to brit pop. Obscured By Clouds is possibly my favourite album by the band, squeezing in nicely between the psychedelic years and the stadium tedium of their more 'celebrated' works. The sleeve design was by a pre-Sleazy Christopherson Hipgnosis. Conceived as a soundtrack to Swiss director  Barbet Schroeder's La Vallee,  Obscured By Clouds stands out for me as it features the debut of the EMS VCS 3 synthesizer which Richard Wright had acquired from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop at some expense - and is highly evident on the title track. Unusually for Pink Floyd, most tracks clock in at under five minutes, the wacky Free Four was a single and in my opinion, Richard Wright has the b...

A Little Mercy

Image
The Durutti Column - Without Mercy [FACT 84 UK 1984 24-Bit FLAC] It is a cold winter's Sunday evening here in western Europe, we lost what little sun we had around 4pm so the clear skies combined with dropping temperatures turn the still air into a foggy blanket. No better time to light a fire, pour yourself a contented glass of Scotland's finest distilled drink, put your feet up and reach for that original pressing of Without Mercy from the winter of 1984. Vini Reilly's most eclectic piece of work was rather self-indulgently commissioned by Anthony H. Wilson as his appreciation of classical music grew and the Factory Records boss wanted to hear how his label's best musician could work within the genre. The results are on the two sides of this album which form one lengthy thirty-eight minute piece for piano, guitar, violin/viola, trumpet & horns, cor anglais and cello.  British modern-classical composer, conductor and violinist John Metcalfe toured the album ext...

Free Chaos

Image
The Durutti Column - Free From All The Chaos [LOTTA 003 UK 2020 24-Bit FLAC] A highly apt song title for 2020, I'd say. From a limited edition crystal clear seven inch single released in a small batch of 750, this year we got a one off Durutti Column single featuring the gently melancholic and innocent voice of Caoilfhionn Rose.  Free From All The Chaos originally featured on the Chronicle XL compact disc set released in 2014. The piano stabs are compressed & overly loud in the righthand channel on the CD release, however now we get the track as it needs to be heard, with all the atmospheric acoustics of the studio adding to the audio experience. Number Three on the flipside is previously unreleased and as you will no doubt be aware any unreleased Vini Reilly is always very welcome around these parts. Go Ahead, London!

Big Audio Dynamite - The Bottom Line [TA 6591 12" WL UK 1985 24-Bit FLAC] As promised here is the full length UK version of The Bottom Line . I have this as a regular 12" as well but the white label is in better condition. I once had the Def Jam zebra-stripe Rick Rubin remix but that seems to have disappeared ...likely about 30 years ago. Ripped at a good volume in 24bit/88.2kHz for your listening pleasure. Enjoy! A1 The Bottom Line B1 BAD

The Bottom Line

Image
Big Audio Dynamite - This Is Big Audio Dynamite [CBS 26714 UK 1985 24-Bit FLAC] Please remember all opinions expressed within these pages are my own, you are entitled to have a differing opinion ....that is how the world is! I am now going to attempt a post on Big Audio Dynamite which may upset some people.... The Bottom Line was a great single, the original UK 12" ran at nearly nine minutes - mixing punk-pop, rap and hip-hop with another fabulous Mick Jones guitar riff. Why on earth did they squeeze an abridged version onto the end of side one of the debut album? Don't even get me onto the tame US remix!  E=MC² was an okay pop single with a catchy hook which was enough to get Big Audio Dynamite into the pop charts. I was disappointed with what followed, I know most loved what the true king of Telecaster punk had become, however I just cannot unsee those images of Jones in that daft oversized B.A.D. baseball cap and brit-hop attire. Don Letts ...a creative wonder with the ...

The Fifty-First State Of Mind

Image
The The - Infected [EPC 26770 UK 1986 24-Bit FLAC] Three years seemed like an eternity when you were in your late teens, that was how long we had to wait for the second The The album. The Sweet Bird Of Truth single seems very apt these days, back then who would have known that Matt Johnson's vision of our pending world would be so vivid and real. Johnson smears his politics all over this album, most of which now remind us of how the UK was during the Thatcher years, however there is more to this album than just politics - Johnson is angry and he wants to show it. Only the classic single, Heartland shows echoes of Soul Mining, were he would have never written lines like... She was lying on her back With her lips parted Squealing like a stuffed pig I was going through the motions Faking the emotions Wriggling around like lizard in a tin ....where Johnson tackles depression through carnal relief. I wonder if he was thinking of Neneh Cherry when he wrote this? This is not the ...

All Linned Up

Image
Shriekback - Jam Science [YLP 504 NLD 1984 24-Bit FLAC] The story of the third Shriekback album is quite interesting; the band entered London's Regent Park Studios armed with an expensively rented Linn drum set (and guitarist Luc Van Acker) to record the album with sessions funded by Y Records. The label were in financial difficulties and some of the studio time went unpaid. Consequently the band were turned away from the studio so they retired to Carl Marsh's Ladbroke Grove flat to finish some tracks, although none were to the band's satisfaction.  Y-supremo Dick O'Dell acquired the 'finished masters' and rushed them over to Holland (where the label supposedly had fewer debts) and hurridly pressed them up as a new Shriekback album. In the meantime, the band signed a lucrative deal with Arista Records and completed the album with considerable polish by producer Paul "Groucho" Smykle. Most tracks were completely re-recorded, others remixed, the remai...

Discovering A New Vista

Image
Flue - Vista [TORSO 335 NLD 1983 24-Bit FLAC] Flue were a Dutch experimental post-punk duo formed from the ashes of Mecano. Vista was their second album for the important Torso label and represents a journey from the Benelux coldwave wasteland of the early eighties through to the delights of Arabia and beyond. Savage Republic and Dead Can Dance were both to explore these references and influences in later years. Vista is a collaboration of styles; suitably gloomy English language vocals throughout, cold wave atmospherics, classical music (you need to hear Prolusion ) and eastern delights. The opening  Esmafarja takes you beyond any Tuxedomoom or Minimal Compact composition, and is written three years before Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard went overly esoteric. Legacy is deep and evocative, with delightful arrangements of Spanish guitar, synths, piano and flute. Topic is dramatic with its concert piano, sax & string quartet over a pounding beat. Refuge and  Pa...

Balearic Japanese

Image
Seaside Lovers - Memories In Beach House [MHJL 154 JPN 2020 24-Bit FLAC] Originally released in 1983 as a significantly rare album on Sony Japan. I've been picking up a few Japanese bits recently and could not resist this clear sea blue vinyl repress of this laid-back Japanese AOR classic. I know this will not be everybody's cup of tea, however for me, there is something delightful about the quality of musicianship, arrangements and packaging, not to mention the quality of the mastering and pressing on these albums. Sony Japan have stuck to the same strict principals (how Japanese) and ensured that the qualities of the original are maintained.  Masataka Matsutoya, Akira Inoue & Hiroshi Sato ‎are the Seaside Lovers. A naff name if ever (possibly lost in translation), this album is a fusion of atmospheric instrumentals, chilled jazz, latin-infused rhythms, adult-orientated jap-rock and soul - the cover picture should tell you what to expect. I know we are in late November ...

Black Mountain - IV [JAG 277 UK 2016 24-Bit FLAC] It is time to have your mind (and speakers) blown by Vancouver psyche-space-retro rockers, Black Mountain. The excellent sleeve tells you exactly what you are going to get here ...and you won't be disappointed as these hairy beasts unleash a barrage of heavy riffs at your unsuspecting ears with all the pomp of Zep, Sab & Floyd - only forty years later than those original rockers.  The unimaginatively titled IV  was unsurprisingly their fourth album, I think this is all you need to hear from Black Mountain as the first three albums were just a support set and they then stood no chance of following this up. Sound familiar?  This is the UK double pressing on yellow vinyl which surprisingly sounds great, my copy came with a bonus CD of demo tracks. If you take this all too seriously then you will have no way of enjoying this album, if you take IV in the spirit in which it was created, then you'll get into thi...

The 24-Bit Dimensional Expansion Program

Image
Sudden Sway - Spacemate [BYN 8B UK 1986 FLAC] I have been promising a new rip of Spacemate for a number of years. This obscure double album by Peterborough's Sudden Sway had featured on my ESWA blog in a number of guises over the last ten years, or so. Never in this quality, so here you are. I must at first offer my sincere thanks to blog follower, penguinflight who carefully packaged up this copy of Spacemate complete and shipped it over, so that it could be ripped and shared to all in a high resolution lossless format. Cheers fella! The most striking aspect of this double vinyl boxed set is Jon Wozencroft's (of Touch cassettes fame) amazingly complex artwork and accompanying graphics. Inside what is basically a cereal box of delights are two vinyl records plus collection of instruction pamphlets, booklets, stickers and wall charts. All that's missing is a tacky badge. Scans of all the contents are included in the archive for your perusal and confusion. To the music:...

Sudden Sway - Fine Pro (Past Present Future) [SAM 284 UK 1986 24-Bit FLAC] Okay, so who hasn't grabbed my rips of all eight versions of Sudden Sway's Sing Song single. This 12" white label was distributed as a marketing tool for those singles and is most certainly designed to confuse, however seems self-explanatory if you listen all the way through the eight versions and all twenty minutes of this release. If you are totally confused by now, my very next post will take your confusion to the next level..... A1 Media B1 Retail

Brain Power

Image
Chakk - Brain [CHAKK 1 UK 1988 24-Bit FLAC] More Chakk ...and another rarity. Hard hitting instrumental indie-funk from the Sheffield posse who were clearly considering this instrumental work out for their debut MCA long player. It was eventually released as a 12" single after the label and band parted company, therefore becoming the final release by Chakk. It's backed by a very different (and superior) vocal version of the clever and moody Years I Worked . A1 Brain B1 Years I Worked

Love Tripping

Image
Chakk - White Label [FONL 001 UK 1985 24-Bit FLAC] Prior to their deal with MCA Records, Sheffield's Chakk snuck this single-sided two track promo out on their own Fon Records label. Featured is an unreleased instrumental version of their second single, You however what is most worthwhile is the earlier & harder (and therefore better) version of Lovetrip featuring the soulful vocals of part-time member John Stuart, powered along by a heavy funk slap bassline from original member Mark Brydon. I am not sure how many copies of this Chakk rarity were circulated, however this Chakk completist is most pleased to own a copy. A1 You (Version) A2 Lovetrip (Version)

Spread The Anti-Virus

Cabaret Voltaire - Red Mecca [ROUGH 27 UK 1981 24-Bit FLAC] A bad workman usually blames his tools, in the case of a vinyl ripper a dodgy pressing makes for plenty of excuses for shoddy workmanship. Original Rough Trade pressings were never of the best quality, that and the general condition of this record were the reasons I have never attempted a rip ...until now of course. I don't own any of the Cab's reissues so have no material for comparison, however I am pleased with the resultant rip of this thirty-nine year old record. My moving coil cartridge picks up much more depth and detail in the lower frequencies than moving magnets and allows space around the peripherals for all the electronic trickery employed by the band at Western Works, therefore I was happy to master this at 24-bit/88.2kHz. Sheffield industrial pioneers were about to undergo a period of significant change with the pending departure of one third of the band, Red Mecca marks Chris Watson's last contribu...

Pauline Murray And The Invisible Girls - Pauline Murray And The Invisible Girls [2394 277 UK 1980 24-Bit FLAC] The girl from Penetration jumped on a train from her native County Durham to Manchester in the summer of 1980 to team up with producer & bassist Martin Hannett, local guitarists Dave Rowbotham & Vini Reilly, keyboardist Steve Hopkins and Buzzcock's drummer John Maher, collectively known as The Invisible Girls.   Hannett's production fingerprints & trademarks are over this album, perhaps a little over-cooked on the trebles in places, however will all the expected digital delay in the right places. If like me, you grew up in Manchester during the early eighties, then you also likely grew up with this album. Sympathy was always a huge favourite during my mid-teens, more so than the obvious stand outs, Dream Sequences and Mr. X .  This album represents one of those unique moments in musical time which would never really be repeated again.   Josef K ‎- It’s Kinda Funny [TWI 022 BEL 2016 24-Bit FLAC] Here's a superb compilation, released on noisy vinyl only, of the six Josef K singles ...highly worthy for all, however made extra special by the inclusion of the 1979 single Chance Meeting b/w Romance from their pre-Postcard days.   O Veux - O Veux [OS31 BEL 2016 24-Bit FLAC] As requested a while back, I've finally tracked down a copy of this release. This was the second double vinyl compilation of O Veux recordings, I posted the first here about a year ago. This edition (let's refer to it as the white album) focuses on this obscure Belgian post-punk band's earliest recordings, using a mix of live tapes and rehearsals. The main chunk of this set is from their very rare  Profound Profane cassette album, released in 1982. Although lacking in fidelity, there is some fabulous stuff on these recordings, most of which was never recorded in a proper studio. Combine this with the Softspot Records compilation and you will have virtually everything that O Veux put on tape. Say No To Funk

Image
Shock Headed Peters - Not Born Beautiful [FIN 1 BEL 1985 24-Bit FLAC] Surely one of the most original bands to fall off the end of post-punk, former Lemon Kitten Karl Blake empties his vivid and really dark imagination lyrically with the Shock Headed Peters. This album is not for the faint of heart, it's powerful, it's poetic, it's the journey through the mind of one of rock's most tortured souls.  This isn't easy listening, this is difficult listening, Blake's warped prose assaults the unwary and leads them down to a very messy end. Parabola and Say No To Funk are powerful stand-out tracks which both pound you incessantly to a pulp. A1 Say No To Funk A2 Ideal A3 Chalet D'Amour A4 Dog Eat Dog Eat Dog A5 Bad Samaritans B1 Parabola B2 Miserable Worm B3 Mon Repos B4 Wheel In The Bait B5 The Kissing Of Gods

St. Ché - Be My... [SIREN 6-12 UK 1986 24-Bit FLAC] Modern Eon front man Alex Johnson aka 'Alix Plain' reinvented himself at St. Ché, or just plain old Ché depending on which release you have to hand. Nothing too extraordinary about his work as a solo artist, except that when you realise that he is accompanied by Sherwood, Wimbush, MacDonald and LeBlanc, you may want to sit up and take notice. Yep, it sounds just like a Tackhead single! I am not sure what's going on during the b-side, however it sounds much too Radio 4 for my level of intellect. A1  Be My.... (Powerstation)  B1  The Exquisite Act

Not Like Everyone Else

Image
Field Music - Plumb [MI0208LP UK 2012 24-Bit FLAC] In order to preserve sonic fidelity, this record has been mastered using significantly less compression and limiting than most contemporary records. For maximum listening pleasure, please turn your stereo system UP! It is refreshing to read the above on the sleeve notes of Field Music's fifth album, Plumb . This is a thirty-five minute, fifteen track album with so many interchanging time signatures, sophisticated harmonies and rapidly shifting arrangements that you could be mistaken that this is a seventies 'classic rock' album. Plumb is actually an homage to the band's working class roots in Sunderland - it is a brave record which many just won't get, especially those who misunderstand the term progressive rock. Field Music are very much a British indie band, they just wanted to do something different after another break in their careers to focus on family life. You need to listen to Plumb as a complete record, ...

The Didsbury Recluse

Image
Jimi Goodwin - Odludek [HVNLP 104 UK 2014 24-Bit FLAC] Odludek is an interesting choice of name for the first solo album by Jimi Goodwin - the unmistakable voice from Mancunian heroes, Doves. In Polish it means recluse , in Slovenian it translates as decision . Before anybody asks, I am no multilinguistic genius, Google was my friend. After their 2009 album, Kingdom Of Rust , Doves ceased to exist as a musical unit - perhaps they had used up all their creative juices as a band - I'm not sure of the exact reasons for their hiatus except that the final album lacked the quality of their previous work. What is evident from Odludek is that Jimi was full of ideas - what is remarkable is that he plays all instruments on this excellent record. You could be mistaken that Goodwin's mix of styles - indie rock, folk, psychedelia, electronics, lounge etc makes this album a confusing mishmash, however you would be wrong. This is Jimi blending & assembling all his influences & in...

ABC - How To Be A Zillionaire! [824 904-1 NLD 1985 24-Bit FLAC] Sheffield's ABC were always going to struggle following up The Lexicon Of Love . They had lost the services of Trever Horn in the studio and the second album Beauty Stab muddled between soul, rock and pop. The original line-up then disintegrated into just the duo of Martin Fry and Mark White who reinvented themselves into cartoon characters for the nutty third album.  I'll get this out of the way quickly ....I really like this album (many did not) - the classic ABC sound is still there, especially on the synth-string laden Be Near Me and Ocean Blue . The remainder is Fairlight and Emulator electronic pop augmented by the odd duo of Eden and David Yarritu, who don't actually appear in the credits. The album was actually recorded with session musicians, including Tackhead's Skip MacDonald and Keith LeBlanc.  This is a unashamed pop record, it failed miserably at the time and ABC moved into house-type mus...

Tasty Pop

The Other Two - Tasty Fish [FAC 329 UK 1991 24-Bit FLAC] Whilst the bearded one and the moody one were off dealing with semi-solo projects, Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris (with ACR's Jez Kerr on backing vocals) followed up their TV soundtrack work with a series and singles as The Other Two. The infectious synthpop of Tasty Fish was their first single, and their last for Factory as London Records mopped up the scraps from the label's failure. I bought the subsequent albums on compact disc, unfortunately as the vinyl editions are now quite a bit. About ten copies of the white label of their debut album on Factory (FACT 330) are known to be in circulation. A1 Tasty Fish (Pascal Mix 12") B1 Tasty Fish (O.T. Mix) B2 Tasty Fish (Pascal Mix)

Music Of Colour

Image
Colored Music - Heartbeat [RH-STORE JPN 7 NLD 2020 24-Bit FLAC] Cast your mind back to August 2019, when I ripped the repressing of Japanese post-punk disco act Colored Music. This rip is still alive - if you missed it then & are quick today. The title track and Heartbeat from that album have been reissued by Dutch label Rush Hour for a modern audience, represented as a new interpretation of what could be deemed dance music. These songs were originally recorded in 1980 and it remains remarkable that with just a little dabble around the edges, they remain timeless. Well done also to the label for resisting that compression button during the mastering process. A1 Heartbeat (Club Edit) B1 Heartbeat (Alternate Version) B2 Colored Music (Club Edit)

Patrick Cowley - Some Funkettes [DE-283 USA 2020 24/88.2 FLAC] In the last few years, Dark Entries have delivered some amazing releases as they accessed the extensive and mostly unreleased archives of the late Patrick Cowley. What is best about this body of work is that it has remained clear of Cowley's disco work, instead focusing on his early electronic experiments and left of field soundtrack work. Some Funkettes is (as the title suggests) a collection of works which bridge the gap between early electronica and disco but remaining true to the original ethos of their project. You will recognise a few of the titles, but these are not as expected, everything gets stripped back to the roots of Cowley's influences with a rawness never heard on his eventual work in the mainstream. A1 Do It Any Way You Wanna A2 Papa Wuzza Rollinston A3 Spiked Punch B1 I Feel Love B2 Dynomite B3 Spiked Punch Dub

Good Stuff

For the unaware, I have rekindled my sister blog, Good Stuff, which reflects on the CD and digital formats which have caught my attention over the years, weeks and months. It was a little quiet during the middle part of 2020 and posts may not be as frequent as on Needle Time, however I think we all need a regular dosage of Good Stuff .

A Factory Novelty Record

Image
Ad Infinitum - Telstar [2001856 (FAC 96) PRT 1984 24-Bit FLAC] Did you know there was a very rare twelve inch version? I've ripped my crackly seven inch pressing a few times for the old ESWA blog, but never this hard-to-find Portuguese twelve inch pressing.  Ad Infinitum was a project by New Order's bass swinger Peter Hook and Lindsay Reade (former wife of the late Tony Wilson) with some help from Eric Random, plus a few Factory luminaries.  This anonymous 7" single, a cover of the Joe Meek classic was released in early 1984 in a unique hologram sleeve. The A-side featured an electronic version of the track - if you listen closely you can hear Hook's treated bass, New Order's old sequencers and what sounds like the same guitar used on Everything's Gone Green . I'm not too sure what Lindsay was doing on the record, although she initiated the project with a vocal version which was abandoned following Meek's objections, leaving her with just a few baaa....

The Barry Gray Orchestra - No Strings Attached [DOW 3 UK 1985 24-Bit FLAC] On the subject of superheroes.... I am willing to bet that most of my readership are of a certain age, where we grew up with Gerry Anderson's sci-fi superhero puppets. I'd also bet that a good few were bullied bespectacled children, forcibly mocked & referred to as Joe 90 . Rest assured my friends, I too was a Joe 90 ! This compilation has appeared in many guises since the sixties, I think my first copy happened after The Thunderbirds theme was used to close out student nights at Manchester's Hacienda in the pre-Madchester days. Life In Catford

Image
Japan - Life In Tokyo [600 048 DEU 1979 24-Bit FLAC] Back in 2011, after the passing of Mick Karn, I've spent a lot of time listening to Japan's very varied output and rediscovered the band. Some of my singles featured on old ESWA posts, this did not, so now seems a fitting time to full together a  rip. This is the German pressing on Hansa and it sounds fab. From Glam Rock to Art Rock via Disco, Jazz and Avantgarde, I doubt any other act has encompassed so many genres, managed to build a significant fan base and then hold it together. This Moroder produced disco single was never hugely successful -  no matter how many times Hansa or Virgin released it. It's strange that it took one of their most inaccessible of tracks, Ghosts to get them a top five hit. A1 Life In Tokyo Part I (Disco Version) B1 Life In Tokyo Part II (Single Version)

Donna Summer - I Feel Love (Patrick Cowley Mega Mix) [5389337 UK 2019 24-Bit FLAC] I was contemplating a rip of my scratchy old  1982 pressing of this electro-disco classic, until I fell into a copy of this recent repress for the nu-disco market.... and they have done it justice. As a bonus you get an extended version of an Earth, Wind & Fire standard on the flipside. More Moroder very shortly ...with some more Cowley to follow when time allows.   Kongas - Anikana-O [91 021 BEL 1978 24-Bit FLAC] The non-African French afro-funk-disco band, Kongas included francophone disco-supremo Marc Cerrone among their ranks. This Belgian 1978 pressing features tracks originally on their self-titled debut album and is on green vinyl  in immaculate condition, making this rip easy work. It's flares and wide collars all round as these mustached groovers bash out a serious afro-beat without, it seems, any Africans. The title track, running at a meaty ten minutes and Jungle were singles originally released around 1974. Kongas Fun seems to borrow more than just a few beats from Candido's Jingo .   Working Week - Working Nights [LP+12'' V2343/MARK 1 UK 1985 24-Bit FLAC] A couple of months back, I upped a new rip of Working Week's immaculate  Venceremos single. There was also an album featuring a new recording of the track and my copy included a bonus 12" of  Stella Marina in two mixes.  Working Nights is more soul than bossa nova, highlighting the voice of Juliet Roberts and targeting the pop/soul market rather than the conscientious jazz-dance buyer. The bonus of Stella Marina features the voice of Jalal from The Last Poets. This is my 2015 rip, tidied up and rebalanced for your listening pleasure.
