Burnt Endings

Bauhaus - Burning From The Inside [VIL-6061 JPN 1983 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] During my 2018 self-guided vinyl record store tour of Tokyo, I went in search of the illusive Japanese pressings of Bauhaus albums, the only one that I came home with was Burning From The Inside . Whilst not their best work (I'll explain my feelings further on), this is easily the best pressing of any album by the band. Cut and pressed by the anonymous salary men in white coats at the Victor Company of Japan, this rip unleashes many of the sonic improvements found with high quality Japanese vinyl compared to the British & European pressings, which for this album were made at Record Service in Alsdorf, Germany back in 1983.  The title of this album is very apt as this is a band on self-destruct, with Pete Murphy mostly AWOL recovering from one ailment, affliction, addiction or another, it was mostly up to Daniel Ash and David J to write & construct most of the record. However it is also ironic...

Bauhaus - The Singles 1981-1983 [205 889 DEU 1983 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Once upon a time, I owned every single by Bauhaus, however when times were hard they had to go. For me Kick In The Eye is the band at their peak, from then on it was a slow & painful descent into dissolution. I am not too sure where I obtained this six track German 33rpm pressing of the Beggars Banquet singles, it is not the best pressing quality but very worth a listen for a revisit to the first three tracks alone. Whilst the Ziggy cover was their biggest moment, I'm not so sure one of the personalities involved was suited to the growing fame. I'll get around to ripping a slightly different pressing of their final album over the next few weeks. A1 The Passion Of Lovers A2 Kick In The Eye A3 Spirit B1 Ziggy Stardust B2 Lagartija Nick B3 She's In Parties

Bauhaus - 4AD [BAD 312 UK 1983 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Nice mini-LP compilation of 4AD era tracks from the influential Northampton post-punk goths Bauhaus. I have always wondered how Bauhaus would have sounded if they had stuck with 4AD Records instead of flipping over to Beggars Banquet.  They would perhaps have survived their 1983 meltdown ....plus their record sleeves would have been better for sure.  Dali's Car anybody?   Bauhaus - The Sky's Gone Out / Press The Eject And Give Me The Tape [BEGA 42/BEGA 38 UK 2LP 1982 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Closing the brief run of Bauhaus-related posts over the last weeks ago, here is the original UK pressing of The Sky's Gone Out which also includes the first edition of their important live album, Press The Eject And Give Me The Tape.   Whilst The Sky's Gone Out will never be regarded as a classic album, I think Bauhaus really did justice to Eno's Third Uncle. Silent Hedges , In The Night and the pagan-styled re-recording of Spirit are among some of their best tracks.  All We Ever Wanted Was Everything  holds a reflective longevity over the years and the unusual dub of  Exquisite Corpse does more than hold listener interest, however for me, the concept piece The Three Shadows falls over badly and spoils a quarter of the album. Wisely, the band chose not to feature the hit single Ziggy Stardust as it would just not fit with the record's...

Bauhaus - In The Flat Field [CAD 13 UK 1980 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] As promised recently, here is my rip of my original UK pressing on 4AD Records of the Bauhaus debut long-player, In The Flat Field . Inspired by a fusion of the darker depths of post-punk & all things Bowie, the Northampton four piece recorded one of the most important genre defining albums of the time. This arrangements are stark & raw, twisted & complex, this is band who were breaking ground outside the norms of post-punk music. Classic tracks such as In The Flat Field , The Spy In The Cab &  Stigmata Martyr still   linger as some of the band's best work. My copy is the original Utopia Studios mastered version, cut at WEA in West Drayton, London. After a good clean, I managed to produce a quality rip for your listening displeasure. On a side note, judging by the large number of re-post requests for older rips, we must have many new readers on Needle Time. All re-posts will now go onto ...

Bauhaus - Mask [BEGA 29 UK 1981 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] I have always considered Bauhaus to be more of a singles band than a band who released a run of consistently great albums. In The Flat Field was stark, raw & genre defining however Bauhaus were still developing, The Skies Gone Out and Burning From The Inside both had issues, so consequently Mask  should always be considered their best long player. My copy is a 1981 original UK pressing, cut by Arun Chakraverty at Master Room and pressed at WEA in West Drayton. After a deep surfactant solution clean followed by fifteen minutes in the HumminGuru, this rip sounds great and only minimal manual click removal was needed. Mask is stacked with Bauhaus favourites, the powerful post-punk opener, Hair Of The Dog , the re-recorded versions of singles  Kick In The Eye and Passion Of Lovers , the atmospheric & eerie Hollow Hills , the goth stomper  Dancing,  complete with sax and disco effects, then of ...

Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead (The Bela Session) [LR 150 USA 2018 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Another record which needed a new rip, with its horrible cheap, thick vinyl noise floor this new cut of the classic Bauhaus debut needed a little more care & attention than I first gave it back in April 2019. Given the poor state of many an original Small Wonder release, this is still going to be the best sounding version cut to vinyl.  The label, Leaving Records have done everything possible to make you believe this has been cut from the session original master tape (they even include a picture of the tape on the inner), however I am not convinced, and strongly believe they used a digital step in the mastering chain. If you just listen to Some Faces you could be forgiven for thinking that Bauhaus were just a seventies power-pop quartet. Bite My Hip is the earliest incarnation of Lagartija Nick , adding value to this EP of out-takes from the original Small Wonder sessions, Boys and...

The Art Of Falling Apart

Bauhaus - The Sky's Gone Out [BEGA 42 UK 1982 24-Bit FLAC] Here is an album that I fell out of love with around the mid-eighties. I foolishly offloaded my original double album version cheaply and picked up this near mint copy during the early noughties for a couple of quid. I support the idea that Spirit was Bauhaus's last great single, The Sky's Gone Out was preceded by their Ziggy Stardust cover which is thankfully skipped in favour of the Eno cover which adorned the b-side of the aforementioned hit single.  Most definitely an album of two sides which really loses the plot once you flip over to side two - this is the sound of a great band falling apart, side one is promising and fits snugly where the Northampton foursome left off with Mask , side two is a baffling slow descent towards disintegration.  A1 Third Uncle A2 Silent Hedges A3 In The Night A4 Swing The Heartache A5 Spirit B1 The Three Shadows Part I B2 The Three Shadows Part II B3 The Three...

Various - Natures Mortes : Still Lives [P-1149 JPN 1982 24-Bit FLAC] I posted my 1997 compact disc reissue of Natures Mortes : Still Lives back on the old blog a few years ago prior to a huge run of 4AD posts. The original album is quite hard to come by as it was a Japanese market release by WEA. I picked up this copy at a recent record fair from a collector who was selling his collection, so it is with great pleasure that I can offer you my rip in 24-bits of high resolution flac. Enjoy!
